I wrote a text story that delved into the relationship between indigenous communities and pipelines. For the text story, I interviewed two experts in native studies and took photos of indigenous artwork. I also collaborated with Savannah in filming, editing and interviewing sources for the mini documentary story.
Savannah Webb
Responsible for writing a text story, I tried to find a fresh perspective on opposition to the Mountain Valley Pipeline and heard about Kenneth Stiles and his independent research on Russian involvement. I interviewed him as well as Brian Johns who works for Virginia Organizing — a group that supports opposition groups in the New River Valley. In addition to writing that hard news article, Cyna and I co-produced the mini documentary on the legal aspect of both pipeline construction and opposition. From researching and interviewing to filming and editing, I am proud of my team’s dedication to this topic.
Owen Kidd
As a member of Hokie Stone, I wrote the text story that talks about the positive impacts of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. In addition, I helped gather photographs for our slideshow on objects that are ran by natural gas. I also helped with the story editing, filming, and managing the teleprompter for the explainer story. Furthermore, I gathered sources for the explainer story, the text story, and met with each individual for interviews. Lastly, I went out with Caden to gather footage for the extra credit assignment while setting up and managing the footage captured by the GoPro.
Caden Dean-Sauter
I gathered data from a variety of sources to compose a data visualization that explores the unknown effects of pipelines, and the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Additionally, I wrote the script and presented it on camera, and helped edit together the explainer story. I also went out into the backwoods of Montgomery County with Owen to film the extra credit story, and then edited it together.
